Narcopolis review5/10/2023 However, whilst Midnight’s Children went some way to raising the reader to the stars with its use of magic realism, Narcopolis insists on keeping our eyes on the gutter, fixed on a Bombay that is rife with drugs and criminal activity. There are certainly some similarities: both are concerned with a newly emancipated India, both feature unreliable narrators and both favour a verbosity of language and a playful approach to form. With a first line like that, Jeet Thayil’s Narcopolis was undoubtably going to draw comparisons with Salman Rushdie’s Midnights Children. ‘Bombay, which obliterated its own history by changing its name and surgically altering its face’

The rosie effect kindle5/9/2023 Precisely at 5 o’clock, Don entered the lecture hall where Gene was still speaking and, instead of quietly waiting for the class to finish, blurted out, “Time’s up. This kind of fixation runs through the book in a humorous, matter-of-fact way, illuminating the mind and motives behind Don’s Asperger’s-type behaviors.įor example, Don wanted to speak to his friend and fellow professor, Gene, and realized that the only time available for this was between 5:00-5:30 PM. Instead, Don devised a scientifically valid questionnaire to help him weed out horoscope readers, fashion obsessives, vegans, sports watchers, smokers… and a long list of other unworthies.ĭon even turned down a real date with a real woman named Julie who understood the reasons for his social ineptness – so he could spend his allotted time working on The Wife Project survey instead. He calls it “The Wife Project.”īecause of his social inadequacies and anomalies, the dating scene is not a workable means for him to meet women. He’s almost 40 and, in his typically Aspergian way, has set up a very logical, methodical system for discovering the ideal wife. He’s a genetics professor who has set himself a goal: he wants to get married. Professor Don Tillman is not your average guy.

Two breathtaking stories, running parallel with one another, but tightly intertwined. Seeking to solve Archibald’s disappearance, she uncovers the grim plans of a dark priest. While Archibald is thrust into an amazing adventure that will test his survival skills, on the flip side of the Earth, his sister Hailee faces her own challenges. And not any kind of dragons -Marodors, enigmatic monsters, part beast, part human, which will make you rethink everything you thought you knew about dragons. But not any kind of witches -an army of young girls, with the most magical weapons. Down here, it’s light versus darkness, magic versus fire, witches versus dragons. When he unlocks the storm inside by accident, the risk-averse boy gets whisked into the underworld of Lemurea, where a battle started in the Middle Ages has yet to be settled. Key to that mystery: an ancient terrestrial globe, populated by the most fantastic creatures. What happened 500 years ago was never supposed to resurface.Įxploring his Grandma’s scary manor, Archibald stumbles upon a dark family secret, linked to a time of great fears and superstitions. Genre: Mystery/Fiction/Middle grade/Fantasyīorrowed this review copy from my bookish best friend. Book Name: Archibald Finch and the lost witches

Eventually Annie got to go to school but her life was never easy. Tewksbury was a neglected poor house, but it was the home the children knew for many years. Since no one could control her or pay for little Jimmy's treatments, they were sent to the Tewksbury. Finding all this unfair, the only thing little Annie could think to do was rage against everyone. Annie would spend her whole life in various degrees of bad vision. Joanna, Annie's real name, developed Trachoma. Mary, the baby, by all accounts may be normal. Thomas, the father, turned to alcohol to soothe his pains. Alice, the mother, and Jimmy developed tuberculosis. Coming from a poor family that had recently moved to America to get away from the Irish famine took it's toll on all the Sullivans. Other relatives were in charge of her brother Jimmy and her sister Mary. Little Annie Sullivan grew up on her cousin's tobacco farm because her mother had died and her father couldn't take care of her and her siblings. The book starts off with Annie's background. It was very interesting to look at her through Annie's eyes. I have read anything that I could find on her. I have been a lover of Helen Keller all of my life. Five out of five stars does not do this book justice in my opinion.

Dan simmons ilium review5/9/2023 The plot, however, is occasionally bogged down in too much detail, which impedes the flow of the pacing and may tempt the reader to (gasp) skip ahead a few pages. Then mix well with handfuls of expertly drawn characters that fairly leap off the page and minute (sometimes to the point of annoyance) descriptions of the fanciful imaginings of Simmons’ mind, and you have a very good novel. While that seems dizzying enough by itself, let’s throw in a society where reading no longer exists (shudder) and the Earth is no longer considered to spherical. Picture it, a world where people can travel in the blink of an eye with the aid of “faxing,” co-exist with the gods of Olympus (who often stop time to interfere in the lives of mere mortals), and the characters from Homer’s The Iliad are flesh and blood beings who bring the great poem to life. Ilium is a brilliantly conceived story that artfully combines Shakepearean and Homerian themes with a surrealistic future in which high technology coexists with dinosaurs.

Threader War by Gerald Brandt5/8/2023 He changed the world by turning off the Source. Darwin's return is greeted with hatred by some, and worship by others. Beyond the Grave by Jude Watson5/8/2023 In addition, Dan wasn't nearly so annoying here and Amy's weaknesses made her more appealing. I was especially pleased to see that the story makes good use of the Egyptian setting. Determining what the clue is in this book is also much more difficult than in earlier books which I thought made the story more entertaining. Jude Watson makes great use of all the characters to produce drama, introduce plot complications, develop relationships, deepen your understanding of the Cahills, and make you appreciate each character more. Compared to the last two books, this one is absolutely super! This story is so delicious that I want to be very careful not to spoil it for you. It's like a much more exciting version of The Amazing Race with much more at stake. That's a good reminder of the dangers that Amy and Dan Cahill will encounter when, accompanied by their au pair Nellie Gomez, they seek one of the 39 clues in Egypt.Īs I've commented on the earlier three books, even if you don't plan to try to win the contest these books make for fun reading. In the Bible, Egypt is often used as a symbol that stands for the evil that is in the world. "Do not go down to Egypt live in the land of which I shall tell you." - Genesis 26:2
